    What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy of restoring normal function to the spine. This is done using gentle, specific Chiropractic adjustments; the purpose is to allow the body to function at its optimum potential. Chiropractic principles also encourage people lead a balanced healthy lifestyle in order to get well and stay well. This includes a positive mental attitude, good diet and proper posture with exercise.

The World Federation of Chiropractic definition:

"A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment."

As well as hands-on treatment; your Chiropractor can offer further support by providing:
    • Postural and ergonomic advice
    • A specific, personalised Spinal Rehabilitation Program
    • General health and exercise advice
    • Referral to a Medical Practitioner where appropriate

    What does a Chiropractor do?

Chiropractors locate and correct areas of the spine which are not functioning properly. The technique is called an adjustment, and is specific to Chiropractic. An adjustment is a precise movement to the spine (or other joints of the body) which improves the function of the area, and allows the nervous system to work correctly.

Chiropractors occasionally use other techniques which are similar to physiotherapy, for example massage or stretching. Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs nor do they perform surgery.

    Is Chiropractic safe?

Yes, all the evidence is that chiropractic is a safe and effective form of care. This is why it features in relevant European and National Institute of Clinical Excellence guidelines, as well as the Department of Health's Musculoskeletal Services Framework. Any side effects of chiropractic treatment are normally minor and don't last very long. For example, some patients may temporarily feel more uncomfortable, stiff or tired for a day or so, similar to after exercise. It's important to talk to your chiropractor if you feel worried about anything either during or after treatment.

    Does an adjustment hurt?

The adjustment is a painless procedure. If a person is already in pain any movement of course can be uncomfortable, but the adjustments are designed to ultimately reduce and eliminate the pain.

    What is that clicking sound?

The 'cracking' sound is gas escaping from the joint. It is the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. The patient's bones do NOT crack.

Do I have to have x-rays?

The Doctor will determine if x-rays are necessary during the examination and will then discuss this with you. If x-rays are considered necessary, you may be referred to a local Chiropractic clinic for these, which has x-ray facilities on site.

Will my insurance cover my Chiropractic care?

Most insurance companies will cover Chiropractic care. A policy arranged through your place of work will usually cover this, but it is advisable to check with them first. At present Triune Chiropractic is not covered by BUPA.

Do I need a referral from my GP to see a Chiropractor?

No. Doctors of Chiropractic are primary health providers. However, some insurance companies may only provide cover with a referral from your GP.

If the Chiropractor decides that you need another form of treatment, they will contact or refer you to your GP, with your permission.

How can Chiropractic benefit my company?

By reducing absenteeism, improving staff well-being and therefore increasing productivity.

How long will it take me to get better?

Different patients have different healing times. Some experience relief immediately, others take longer. This depends upon the severity of the problem and how long it has been there. A typical short course of treatment involves 6 weekly sessions, after which the Chiropractor will re-examine the person and determine how they have progressed.

Do I have to visit a Chiropractor forever?

No. There are three types of care package to choose from:

    1. Relief Care
      To take away the symptoms.
    2. Corrective Care
To restore the proper function of the body, eliminating the underlying reason why the symptoms were there in the first place.
    3. Maintenance
After relief/corrective care, this involves periodic checkups to continue to improve the function of the body, and prevent recurrence or new complaints. The frequency of this is flexible, most people find that monthly checkups work well for them.
